About the Presenters

Michael Kendrick has been a steadfast friend and ally to many Queenslanders who struggle to create inclusive visions of community life for people with disability. Michael has been a regular visitor to Queensland for over 20 years and has been a long time supporter of the work of CRU and other organisations supportive of real lives in the community for people who have a disability and their families. As well as has knowledge of local and national issues, Michael is able to offer his international perspective on the need for strategic safeguards for people with disability in order to build good lives in the community. Michael is well known as an educator, advocate, consultant and author. Michael’s new book Letting in the Light has recently been published by CRU.

Fiona McGill is a very skilled and dynamic presenter, responsible for the development of ground breaking programs in community integration and relationship development. Her workshops will also have a strong, practical emphasis. Fiona has recently moved to Brisbane to live.

Martina Rynne has an MA degree in Community Development from the National University of Ireland Galway. She has worked for the last 5 years, with the Brothers of Charity Services Clare, in Ireland. Over the past 5 years, the Brothers of Charity Services Clare have been undergoing a process of change from segregated institutional type services to individualised community based services. Martina has been heavily involved in this process.

Ric Thompson is Townsville based and well known to CRU. He brings a very practical, interactive and commonsense approach to all his work that participants find useful and relevant to their own situations.

CRU is embarking on a series of CRUcial Conversations throughout 2009. Our first one for the year was on 19th February with Anita Speed who shared her learnings and experiences of a conference she attended in New Zealand in November 2008 entitled “Trusting Partnerships”. The conference aimed at advancing our understanding of the impact of establishing right relationships between families, people with disability, organizations, services providers and community.

Fliers for each of these events will be circulated shortly with content, venue and time details. In the meantime, we encourage you to put these not-to-be-missed dates in your diaries and look forward to sharing the learning with you and the opportunity to engage with each other as we individually and collectively strive to create and sustain a healthy service sector and community responsive to the needs of people with disability and their families.
